OFF THE BIKE HOBBIES: Working! Hanging out at the beach

BIO:I grew up in Southern California and moved to Texas during High School and it was actually there that I discovered mountain bike racing. My family supported me all along and after slowly going through the ranks I was contending for the state championship and racing collegiate nationals for Texas A&M. I made amazing friends there and life was good. My only problem was allergies that were slowly but surely bringing my health down and after graduating I made the move to California with my future wife Beth.

I was off the bike for a year, started a good job, but then felt the urge to jump right back into racing in 2005. From then on I’ve been working full time and chasing the US National Series in the pro class trying to become the best athlete I can be. I was top 20 for the series in 2007 and 2008, with my top 2009 result being 13th at Sea Otter. It’s a tough balance day to day, but I love my lifestyle and want to make the most of the gifts that I’ve been blessed with.

2010 RACE SCHEDULE:

Idyllwild Challenge

US CUP: As a privateer, what’s your thoughts on the National and Regional Triple Crown races?
DW: The Triple Crown (national and regional) are great new series for the sport. I think the promotion and marketing of the races and riders that the US Cup delivers is what sets it apart and is what the sport has needed for several years now.   The regional series is great for a privateer because a 7-8 race local series is too many races for someone also traveling to the national level races.

US CUP: Who’s helping you make ends meet on the racing side of things for 2010?
DW: This will be my 3rd season with support from Trek and I once again look forward to being on  the best bikes out there. Cytosport is also a huge help with great nutritional products. This season I’m paying for all of my own travel expenses.

US CUP: Anyone you want to thank?
DW:My awesome wife Beth

US CUP: What are your top 5 race highlights?
DW:
13th 2009 Sea Otter Classic
6th 2009 US Cup West Series
16th 2008 NMBS Series
20th 2007 NMBS Series
2nd 2002 NMBS Series Semi-Pro
